Too much plaque causes your gums to bleed. Bacteria makes plaque. Bacteria grow in your mouth because of the small specks of dinner that get stuck in and amongst our teeth and gums. Fairfax City dentist Fotolia_6874248_XS.jpg

Brushing removes a good deal of the food crumbs and plaque. Mouthwash gets rid of the germs and gives you sanitary gums.

It's best to shop for a mouthwash that is created to kill germs. Many of the mouthwashes you can buy don't get rid of odor-causing germs. After the perfume runs out, your halitosis comes back with an attitude.

Infected gums might not be a vital concern to young and healthy folks. But for anyone with a weakened immune system, the little things can be the worst trouble. Thwarting a gum infection could mean cancelling a sure trip to the hospital. Or increasing the number of years they have to live. There could be a connection between gum disease and heart attacks, some researchers believe.

Though brushing is helpful (for all intents and purposes) to the gums, too much may actually eat away at the gums and separate them a little from the point where they are fixed to the teeth. This gives more openings for food to bunch up. And the more food that gets confined, the more bacteria there will be. That's when you get gum infections.

When the teeth next to the gums get uncovered, they get all dried up from the mouthwash, because most mouthwashes are alcohol based. Alcohol dissolves like the wind, taking the humidity of your mouth along with it. This can cause your teeth to become sensitive.

At times when the gums are bloody and too much of the teeth are bare, I suggest placement of dental veneers the instant they are able. Come to see me at my Fairfax City dental practice and we'll definitely put a stop to gum disease and sensitive teeth with just two appointments. In Fairfax City gum disease is something I deal with repeatedly.
